Stage and Progressive Stamping

Stamping dies are tooling devices which are used for cutting and forming metal into desired shapes as well as in cutting and forming desired shapes into metal. Dies are generally two mating components which are necessary in order for sheet metal to be pressed or stamped. Although there various types of dies in the market today, they can all be classified into two simple categories: cutting and forming. In recent years, however, dies which can do both cutting and forming are being used more and more often. There are many types of commonly used dies in the market today. Two of the most well known classifications of dies being used are stage stamping and progressive stamping dies.

Stage stamping dies are more commonly known as single-station dies. Single Station Dies are generally used for low production. They are use by small industries which only require hand-fed single cutting and forming operations.

Progressive stamping, on the other hand, is familiarly known as multi-stage stamping and is one of the most common as well as fastest means of producing assembly parts. Progressive stamping is also referred to as automatic stamping. Unlike the single station dies, every stage in the progressive stamping process uses a common single die, which is used for cutting and forming. Every station is sequenced accordingly.
